Why do schools still use IXL? ›

ESSA Tier 1 evidence

Independent research from Johns Hopkins University has verified that IXL meets the ESSA Tier 1 standards for evidence-based efficacy.

IXL has a strong focus on math and language arts, while Khan Academy offers a wider range of subjects. Consider your learning style: If your child is a visual learner, then you may prefer Khan Academy's videos and articles. If your child is an auditory learner, then you may prefer IXL's games and quizzes.

After thorough research and analysis, we believe that if you're looking for alternatives to IXL, Khan Academy, Time4Learning, Wiingy, Pearson Smarthinking, and Kumon, these are all great options to consider.

Others may argue that IXL is great, and that if a kid is stuck on a problem it will give them tips (the tips only appear once they get a question wrong.. seriously?). Again, please, if you use IXL, all it's doing is putting your child under a lot of stress.

This site is absolutely outrages! I have had 5TH GRADERS start crying in frustration over this site. The main problems are it does not encourage students to learn, the point system is unfair, and is destroys a students self esteem. I have had many of my students tell me "ixl makes me feel dumb...".

MathXL® is a powerful online homework, tutorial, and assessment system that accompanies Pearson textbooks in Mathematics and Statistics.

The majority of students really liked Delta Math. They said the explanations that were given when they missed a problem were more succinct and understandable than what they found on IXL. The students really didn't have anything negative to say about Delta Math.

IXL is a great tool to practice and reinforce topics. For math, it would work well as one of several stations that include manipulatives, group whiteboard practice, and other applied methods.

While we offer memberships for online practice that are widely used by teachers and homeschool parents to support their teaching, we are not an accredited school and are not authorized to verify or issue school credits. Completing skills on IXL will not equate to proof of grade completion or transcripts.

The Real-Time Diagnostic is always available; students can enter the Diagnostic at any time and answer as many questions as they like. When students first use the Diagnostic, we recommend they aim to diagnose until their complete diagnostic data is revealed—for most students, this will be around 45 minutes per subject.
