Overview of Responsibilities: Efficiently underwrites consumer loan applications according to service level expectations in order to deliver the desired member experience. Evaluates loans in order to provide new and existing members with options that will help them meet their financial needs. Recommends creative solutions, including cross selling other relevant MSGCU products.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Develops member relationships by providing high-quality service to each individual. Works with new and existing members to identify financial needs and assist them in the selection of the appropriate financial products and services, including offering alternatives in order to find the best solution for the member while balancing the risk to MSGCU.
  • Supports achievement of MSGCU’s lending goals and key performance indicators by promoting all offered financial products including; mortgage products, consumer loans (secured loans, VISA cards, etc.), and consumer loan insurance products (debt protection, credit life and disability insurance, mechanical breakdown insurance, and GAP insurance, etc.).
  • Evaluates and ensures loan documents are accurate, complete, and compliant.
  • Reviews financial statements, credit reports, applicable ratios (i.e. debt ratios, loan-to-value), and other supporting documentation to ensure loan decisions accept the appropriate level of risk.
  • Uses credit scoring, sound lending practices, regulatory requirements and sound judgment to make lending decisions for the benefit of the membership while balancing the risk to MSGCU.
  • Maintains relationships and interacts with members, dealers, and internal partners to gather information needed to make appropriate decisions and explain rationale behind credit decisions.
  • Explores options for members when loans are denied such as credit counseling rationale methods to improve FICO score.
  • Provides advice and assistance to Branch and Call Center team on budget counseling, consolidations, pay methods, and other areas relating to members’ financial needs
  • Ensures compliance with all applicable laws, regulations, and MSGCU policies and procedures as related to assigned products.

  • Knowledge of loan products, services, insurance of accounts, account vesting, consumer and mortgage lending principles and practices.
  • Familiarity or ability to become familiar with MSGCU's savings, checking, and loan products and services, as well as specific loan programs, qualifications, insurance, etc.
  • High level of mathematical ability and critical thinking skills.
  • Intermediate proficiency with Microsoft Office software products (Word, Excel, Outlook) and the ability to operate other standard office equipment.
  • Advanced knowledge of core processing systems and other lending related systems.

Essential Preparation and Experience:

  • High school diploma or GED required. Bachelor’s degree in Business Administration or related field preferred; and
  • 4 years of experience in underwriting lending with loan approval authority. Preference for consumer lending underwriting experience.
  • Preference for financial analysis experience and experience using the Symitar data system and TCI loan origination system.
  • Internal candidates (MSGCU team members) must consistently meet underwriter key performance metrics or have documented success growing consumer loans profitability and have a performance score that meets effective levels.

Compensation and Benefits:

  • Base salary begins at $56,000 / year
  • Medical, dental and vision on your first day! You can choose the most generous Health Savings Account (HSA)-eligible medical plan with no monthly premium for you (and your family)
  • If you are at least 21 years old, you will receive a 3% contribution from MSGCU, and a 100% match for the next 7% you contribute to your 401(k)
  • You will enjoy 12 paid holidays and up to 120 hours of PTO your first year of service (pro-rated based on start date)

Working Conditions:

  • Office and branch location environment with little discomfort from noise, extreme temperature, dust, or other factors.
  • Occasionally required to travel throughout MSGCU's service area as business needs require..
  • Exposed to potentially hazardous conditions, such as robbery. Receives detailed instructions and security procedures on an annual basis to minimize risk.
  • This work involves sitting most of the time with brief periods of walking or standing and may occasionally require lifting and/or moving up to 10 pounds.
